Types of KOA Campgrounds Available

Before listing prices for KOAs in all the states, you first need to understand the differences between the three types of parks the company offers.

KOA also has a portion of their RV parks corporate-run, while the rest are franchise owners who must maintain the high standards set by the corporation to use the name.

KOA Journey Campgrounds

A koa journey campground

The Journey campgrounds are KOA’s answer to RVers looking for a place to stop overnight or for a short getaway.

The location of Journey Parks is close to interstates or main highways to lessen the distance to reach the campground after a long day of travel and a convenient way to get back on the road quickly in the morning.

The amenities at Journey parks are basic:

  • 30 and 50-amp pull-through sites
  • Restrooms/Bathhouse with hot showers
  • Safe after-hours check-in service
  • Dog park
  • Propane

The RV park will have an office and a small store, with slight variations found in some franchisee-run campgrounds.

Hawaii and the following states do not offer KOA Journey campgrounds:

  • Delaware
  • Maryland
  • Massachusetts
  • New Hampshire
  • New Jersey
  • Rhode Island

KOA Holiday Campgrounds

A KOA holiday campground

The KOA Holiday campgrounds expand their amenities and services for RVers looking for a weekend adventure or want more comfort during a week or more extended vacation.

The location of Holiday KOA parks is further off main highways, but generally near larger cities or tourist attractions, so campground guests can easily access and enjoy the regional culture.

The amenities you’ll find at Holiday parks include:

  • Standard and Deluxe 30 and 50-amp pull-through sites with patios
  • Heated Swimming Pool and Hot Tub
  • Restrooms/Bathhouses with hot showers
  • Cabins that sleep from 2-8 guests (larger units have bathrooms)
  • Playground
  • Dog park
  • Safe after-hours check-in service
  • Meeting spaces for family or club events
  • Camp store (includes beer and wine)
  • Propane
  • Upgraded tent sites
  • Family-friendly activities

The Holiday parks are larger, with more campsites and sections set aside for tenting and cabins. In addition, expect to find additional bathhouses to accommodate the needs of more guests, laundry facilities, and a swimming pool and hot tub that may only be open seasonally in colder climates.

Many Holiday parks also offer mini-golf, shuffleboard or basketball courts, bike or canoe rentals, and seasonal activities ideal for guests of all ages.

There are 44 states that feature KOA Holiday campgrounds. The list of states without the option are:

  • Delaware
  • Maryland
  • Nevada
  • Hawaii
  • North Dakota
  • Rhode Island

KOA Resort Campgrounds

The KOA Resort RV parks are destination campgrounds where guests can have a great time without ever leaving the grounds if they so choose.

The amenities at Resort parks include:

  • Standard and Deluxe 30 and 50-amp campsites with patios
  • Resort-style heated Swimming Pool(s) and Hot Tub, often with a kids water-play area
  • Numerous Restrooms/Bathhouses with hot showers
  • Cabins that sleep from 2-8 guests (larger units have bathrooms)

KOA Resorts are larger RV parks with many more options for fun or relaxation both inside and outside the campground. Each park offers the amenities above, but most also provide unique extras like splash pads, jumping pads, nightly entertainment, or other fun surprises.

Here are the states with KOA Resort RV campgrounds:

Ways to Save Money at KOA Campgrounds

If you want to lower your camping costs at KOA, consider these three options:

Join the KOA Rewards Club

Loyal travelers who often camp with KOA should join their KOA Rewards program for a yearly fee of $33.

The program offers a 10% discount off the daily registration rate at over 500 KOA locations and often pays for itself on your very first stay.

The program also builds rewards points you earn with each stay that are redeemable for cash off future reservations. It even includes a free night at participating KOAs during KOA Rewards Weekend.

The program works with these companies for more discounts on services: Allstate RV Roadhelp, Goodyear Tires, Dish TV, KOA Health + by Careington International Corporation, and the RV Loan Center by Essex Credit.

Choose the Right Type of KOA Campground

A KOA campground

All KOA campgrounds fall into three categories, with the Journey parks generally the least expensive per night and the Resort parks the highest. However, location plays a significant role in the final price of any park type.

If you aren’t looking for a swimming pool or anything fancy, you can bypass the Holiday or Resort KOAs and book a campsite at a Journey park instead to save money.

Check out KOA Campground’s Seasonal or Monthly Rates

Many KOAs offer substantial discounts off nightly rates when you book for a month or more.

A longer stay is a great way to save money and take in all the local sites if you have time on your RV travels.

Final Thoughts

Thousands of loyal KOA campers find it comforting to know what to expect every time they pull into a KOA Resort, Holiday, or Journey campground.

I hope you use the information in this guide to KOA campgrounds, including the prices per state, so you can compare the cost and amenities to other RV parks on your travel route and choose the campground that suits you best!
